Sponsor Guidelines
Who is a Sponsor?

A sponsor is a Spiritual friend.

A sponsor represents the parish community in a special way: In providing one-on-one support the candidate needs for growth and development.

A sponsor is called to share his/her faith with the candidate

A sponsor helps the candidate understand what it means to live as a Christian by being a witness in his or her own life and by guiding the candidate.

A sponsor is like a bridge for the candidate into the life of the parish community.

A sponsor helps the candidate understand Catholic traditions. (You are part of the living tradition of the Church. It is your faith an experience that God used to pass the faith to your companion.)

A sponsor is one who listens with reverence and respects the candidate.

A sponsor provides opportunities for the candidate to share what is going on in his or her life.

A sponsor not only gives witness to the great mystery of God’s transforming love but is also a witness to how this love is transforming the candidate.

A sponsor introduces the candidate to the various ministries of the Church and opportunities for service.

A sponsor vouches for the candidate’s sincerity and gives witness to the community on his/her behalf.
Sponsor Requirements

Sponsor must be a baptized Catholic who has been fully initiated through the sacraments of the Church. Meaning they have received: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

Sponsor must be a fully participating Catholic; attending mass on a weekly basis and taking regular advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).

If the Sponsor is married, the marriage must be a valid Catholic marriage, blessed by the Church.

The Sponsor may NOT be one of the parents of the Candidate.
